steps of how to make incense sticks

For ancient Chinese herbal incense sticks:

  1. Herbal Material Sorting & Purification: Remove impurities from raw herbs to eliminate bitter stray odors
  2. Ultra-fine Grinding & Multi-layer Sifting: We use stone mills and stone mortars for grinding instead of industrial high-speed grinders that burn off essential aromatic oils. All aromatics are ground into ultra-fine powder (120–150 mesh), then sifted 3 times with silk gauze to remove coarse fiber and impurities. Fine powder ensures even burning and smooth gradual scent release.
  3. Precise Formula Blending: All aromatic powders are blended strictly by weight per the Ming royal formula. We layer the powders in order: panda bamboo base powder → woody core scents → resin fixatives → floral top notes, with thorough mixing for preliminary aroma integration.
  4. Long-time Hand-kneaded Incense Mud: Mix natural nanmu plant binder and spring water into blended powder gradually. Our craftsmen knead and pound the paste repeatedly for about 30 minutes until it gains elastic, earlobe-soft texture (non-sticky, non-crumbling).
  5. Sealed Resting for Incense Mud: Seal the incense paste and rest in cool shade for 4–6 hours to release internal tension and prevent cracking after forming.
  6. Hand Extrusion & Shape Trimming: Uniform incense sticks are extruded with traditional hand tools, laid on bamboo drying mats. Artisans straighten bent sticks manually and cut them to unified length, reserving shrinkage allowance for drying to guarantee consistent ~40-minute burn time for every stick.
  7. Shade Drying (Critical Step): Fresh incense sticks are air-dried for 2–3 days in cool, ventilated space (22–26°C constant temperature). We flip sticks daily for balanced dehydration. Direct sunlight would evaporate precious bamboo and herbal essential oils, causing scent loss and stick cracking. Slow natural drying locks in full layered fragrance.
  8. Manual Finishing Screening: Fully dried incense sticks are manually inspected. Bent, broken or irregular sticks are discarded to maintain uniform premium quality for all finished products.
  9. Ceramic Jar Sealed Aging: Qualified incense sticks are sealed in purple clay ceramic jars for cellar aging for a minimum of 30 days. Consistent proper storage makes the scent purer and smoother over years, matching our long-term storage feature.
  10. Final Combustion Inspection & Packaging: Aroma, smoke texture and burn stability are tested before packaging. Qualified incense is sealed and packaged to finish the whole ancient craft production.
