Unlike generic single-wood scents, this ancient multi-herb recipe follows the classical Chinese blending principle, He-Xiang, balancing warm woods, cooling foliage, soft florals and gentle resins to quiet racing thoughts, ease tension and support restful sleep. No synthetic fragrance oil or industrial chemical additives are applied in authentic He-Xiang craftsmanship.

Giant pandas eat bamboo for up to thirteen hours a day and absorb almost none of it. A panda's gut takes in about 17 to 20 percent of the nutrients; the rest passes through as intact bamboo fiber. The keepers at Ningbo Wildlife Park call the droppings qingtuan, "green rice cakes," because that is what they look like: pale, pressed fiber with a faint smell of fresh bamboo.

What the panda does to the bamboo

Bamboo cut straight from the grove and dried makes a middling incense base. The scent is sharp and grassy at first, fades within minutes, and disappears entirely under heavier notes like sandalwood and agarwood.

Panda fiber behaves differently. Hours inside the panda's digestive tract soften the strands while leaving them whole, and the bamboo's aromatic compounds stay inside the fiber instead of evaporating off a drying rack. Refined into powder, it gives a round, cool, long-lasting bamboo note that still reads as bamboo in a finished blend.

You cannot manufacture this material. It only exists because a panda ate bamboo and passed the fiber whole.

From the panda house to the workshop

The refinement takes about thirty days, and it goes like this:

1. Collection. Keepers gather fresh fiber the same day it is produced.
2. Sorting. Leftover fruit and vegetables from feeding are picked out by hand, along with pieces of stalk and leaf.
3. Boiling. The fiber is boiled four times, forty minutes each round, at about 120°C. This is the step that sterilizes it.
4. Rinsing. Between boils, the fiber is rinsed until the water runs clear.
5. Sun-drying. The fiber dries naturally in the sun for 15 days, which also brings out the pale gold color you see in the finished powder.
6. Grinding. Finally it is ground at low temperature, so the heat of the mill never reaches the scent.

Is it clean?

This is the first question everyone asks, so here is the whole answer. The fiber is boiled four times, repeatedly, before anything else happens to it. Boiling is the same logic that makes drinking water safe: heat, applied long enough, leaves nothing alive. 

Two things help as well. A panda's gut works fast, and the fiber passes through before rot or fermentation can start, which is why fresh droppings smell of bamboo and nothing else. And nothing synthetic is added at any stage. What reaches the workshop is plant fiber, water, and sunlight.

Who may use it

Giant pandas are a protected species in China, and their biological materials are strictly controlled. We run a physical shop inside Ningbo Wildlife Park, and we hold the official authorization to collect and refine panda bamboo fiber for incense. As far as we know, that makes us the only incense maker in the world working with panda bamboo fiber.

What it becomes

From here the fiber enters the same process every Piqiu batch goes through: blended by weight with herbs and natural binder under the jun-chen-zuo-shi structure, shaped by hand, and shade-dried for 12 months. The craft is inscribed on China's national list of intangible cultural heritage (project Ⅷ-224), and the workshop has run in our family for five generations.

What you get when you light it is a cool, green, quiet bamboo note under the herbal blend. The closest description we can offer is a bamboo grove after rain.

Is it really panda droppings?
It is really bamboo fiber that passed through a panda. The pandas eat the bamboo; we use the part they can't digest.
