There is a book in China, Shen Yi Jing, the Classic of Spirits and Marvels. In its far southwest it places a strange rabbit, E Shou. It has a human face and speaks fluently. People love to gather around and listen to it, because everything it says is wrong on purpose. It tells you east and means west. It praises what it despises. And the book adds, almost as a joke, that its meat is delicious, but if you eat it, you can never speak a true word again.
We did not eat the beast. We borrowed one trick instead: a room will believe whatever its nose is told.
