The bird that eats nightmares

In the Shan Hai Jing (Classic of Mountains and Seas), one of China's oldest books, a strange bird appears with three heads and six tails. Its name is Qi Tu. The old story says that eating the bird would keep nightmares away. We're not suggesting you eat the bird. We turned the legend into incense instead.

Qi Tu Bird Incense is a hand-rolled Chinese herbal incense made with sandalwood, benzoin, atractylodes root, spikenard, and osmanthus. Its warm, woody scent with a soft floral note is made for the part of the evening when the house is quiet, but your mind isn't. Light a stick. Let the room get quieter.

Your brain won't quit at 2 a.m.

Sometimes the hardest part of going to sleep isn't getting into bed, because somehow your brain is still at work. The meeting from this morning, the email you forgot to send, tomorrow's to-do list, a conversation from years ago that suddenly seems worth revisiting at 2 a.m.

For centuries, traditional Chinese incense has been part of evening routines. It's not as a quick fix, but as a way of changing the atmosphere around you. A gentle scent, a slower pace, and a small signal that the day is over.

  • The phone-down ritual.

The work chat has gone quiet and the group text has stopped pinging. You put the phone muted on the nightstand, and light one stick. The osmanthus rises first, then the benzoin. You can feel the day thinning out.

  • The 11 p.m. second wind.

You were tired, then you weren't, and now your brain wants to renegotiate the whole day. Light the stick and sit somewhere other than the bed. The Qi Tu's job was to get through the night.

  • Sunday night.

The weekend is over, the week hasn't started, and your shoulders have already gone to work. One stick, ten minutes of writing out tomorrow in a notebook, and the to-do list moves from the back of your head onto the page where it belongs.

  • The hotel room.

A bed that isn't yours, a city that isn't home, air that smells like recycled plastic. One stick changes the room in three minutes. It does not smell like any hotel, which is the point.

  • The day that won't let go.

Some days follow you into the next one. You don't have to fix that tonight. Make the room, go to bed, and let tomorrow's version of you deal with tomorrow.
