The ape whose arms reach your whole body.

You know the Monkey King. The old texts count him among the four great spirit monkeys. This one is another of the four: the Tong Bi ape, whose name means "arms that pass through." The old books say he could grab the sun and moon, shrink a thousand mountains, and see what was coming before it arrived. He is not a fighter. He is a reacher, and his arms go all the way through.

We made that reach into incense. Tong Bi Yuan Hou Incense is hand-rolled from traditional Chinese herbs in an old warming formula, the kind Chinese apothecaries have passed down for centuries. It is for the tired that comes slow: weeks of overwork, a mind that will not switch off, a body that has stopped bouncing back.

You keep saying you're fine. You're not.

You sleep eight hours and wake up tired. You drink water, you take the stairs, you keep the plans short. You still cancel evening plans because your battery is at four percent by 6 p.m. You tell yourself it's just busy. It's quieter than busy.

This tired doesn't come from one bad night. It collects. A deadline here, a hard month there, a year of pushing through when you should have stopped. TCM has a name for it: xu (虚), usually translated as deficiency. Think of it as the body's account running low. The West calls it burnout, fatigue, running on fumes. Chinese herbalists have been writing formulas for this state for a very long time. This incense is one of them.

Details

  • A guardian with longer arms than the others: The Tong Bi ape is one of the four great spirit monkeys of Chinese mythology, a nd what sets him apart is reach, not wisdom and not protection. "Tong Bi" means "arms that pass through", it simply gets everywhere at once. Light a stick when what weighs on you is not one problem you can name.
  • A formula, not a fragrance: Most incense is a scent you burn. This is closer to a recipe. Every herb has a job, and the proportions were settled over generations of trial, by people who wrote down what worked and threw out what didn't. A natural plant-based binder holds the stick together. No synthetic fragrance, no charcoal core, nothing dipped in perfume oil. What you smell is the herbs themselves.
  • Hand-rolled in small batches, the slow way: No factory line. No machines. No dipping. Each stick is hand-rolled in small batches, then air-dried for 15 days. The slow drying is part of the formula: it lets the materials marry. One stick burns about 40 minutes, the length of one meditation, one slow dinner, or one episode of something you actually want to watch, and the scent settles into a room for hours after.
  • It smells like a room where people are taken care of: Picture an old apothecary in winter: wood cabinets, glass jars of dried roots, a small clay burner on the counter, someone who just finished grinding herbs. The air is warm and slightly sweet, with a soft bitter note at the back. It is not loud, and it is not trying to impress a guest. It smells like a place where someone has been doing this work for a long time.
  • A ritual for the slow rebuild: In the Chinese tradition, deep replenishment is not a one dramatic night. It's a hundred ordinary evenings. Light the stick, sit with it, and let the warm room do its quiet work. No timer, no app, nothing to track. You just show up for yourself, once a day, for as long as it takes. The formula is one your great-grandmother would recognize. The pace is the one your body has been asking for.
  • Key botanical ingredients: Codonopsis root, White Atractylodes, Angelica root, Peony root, Szechuan Lovage, Astragalus root, Cinnamon, Licorice
  • Dimensions: Box of 120 incense sticks. (Approx. 40 minutes burn time per stick)

Where it fits into your week

The Sunday reset. The laundry is running, the inbox is muted, and the only thing on the agenda is being a person for an hour. Light a stick, open a window, and let the warm root smell take over the room. This is what the formula was made for: a long, slow exhale.

The 9 p.m. wind-down. The work is done, the kitchen is clean, and your shoulders are still somewhere around your ears. Sit down and burn one. The cinnamon comes first, then the soft angelica underneath. Your nervous system doesn't know what the herbs are called. It knows what "warm room, no demands" feels like.

After a long season of giving. You shipped the project, came back from the hard trip, or spent six weeks being the person everyone needed. The body keeps score long after the calendar clears. One stick a night for two or three weeks won't undo that. It is a way to tell yourself the giving is over, for now.

The slow morning. If you are up before dawn, light one first thing and let it change the air before the day starts making demands. Pair it with something hot. Three minutes of effort, a calmer hour ahead.

Let it reach the parts you've been ignoring.

The whole point of the Tong Bi ape is the arms: the reach, the slow even coverage of everything at once. Your body has been asking for the same thing for a while now. This is one way to answer.

The gift for the friend who "doesn't need anything." They give to everyone and never ask for anything back. They don't need another candle. They need permission to sit still for an evening. This is that, in a box.
